Cooke County Indoor Archery Match

Eight Dallas County archers braved the cold on Saturday to compete in the Cooke County Indoor Archery Match in Gainsville, Texas.  Hand warmers were distributed to each competitor as they checked-in and they helped to keep fingers warm between ends.
It may have been cold but the Dallas County team was on fire! Everyone placed in their division and had a very successful (and fun) day.

Two new archers joined the group this year and both were successful at their first 4-H archery match. Harper scooped up the 2nd place spot in her junior division and Victoria placed third in the very competitive Senior Compound division. Congratulations and welcome to the group!

Thanks to Cooke County for hosting this event. We look forward to participating again next year!

Greek Cowboys on Parade

The Greek Cowboys tried to raise awareness and lasso some new club members by marching in the Coppell homecoming parade. Club reporter Mallory Sherrer  said "We hope some people might be interested in joining us for our next meeting after they see us in the parade. We thought this would be a good way to tell people in our community about our club."
Go team!

Urbanites have something to crow about!

Urbanites had a grand time at the Poultry Show at the State Fair of Texas!

A dozen Urbanite club members entered their prize poultry and eggs in the Poultry Show at the State Fair of Texas. Almost 700 birds and hundreds of eggs were exhibited at this open show. Urbanites came home with loads of ribbons and the bragging rights that accompany them.

Sunday morning the club hosted a bagel brunch for all of the youth poultry exhibitors from around the state. It was an opportunity for youth poultry enthusiasts to celebrate their victories, share stories and do a little last minute prepping and primping for the Poultry Showmanship Competition.

Gecko True Value Hardware graciously sponsored the Poultry Showmanship which is a very competitive knowledge and skill based competition.  This is only the 2nd year that this event has been part of the State Fair Show.

Three veteran Urbanite showmen ranked at the top of the pack. Eamon (2nd place), Christian (4th place) and McKenzie (5th place). Club members Harper, Paola, Hannah, Jefferson and Abi were first time exhibitors and showmanship contestants.

A good time was had by all!

Urbanites Caught Using Fowl Language...Again!

It is a habit they can't seem to break. This was the 5th year that the Urbanites poultry project group has been caught  using lots of fowl language at Stonewall Jackson Elementary school as part of Stonewall's annual fundraiser - Peep at the Coops. Project members brought their favorite birds and had fun sharing their knowledge with folks from all over Dallas who came to tour a variety of backyard coops.
Many thanks to all the 4-H members and their families who generously spent their day to giving back to our friends at Stonewall Jackson and our community.
A great time was had by all.

Texas Brigades Natural Resource and Leadership Development Camp

Please help us recruit cadets (teens 13-17 years old) and CEAs as Covey (or Herd or Flock or Ranch, given the particular camp).  A 5-day tour of duty with a Brigades camp will leave one physically exhausted but mentally rejuvenated about our youth's role in conservation. Visit quailresearch.org to view a most recent testimonial of an urban Dallas girl who has now "seen the light" regarding conservation, see the Feb. issue of the e-Quail Newsletter under the heading of "intern diaries."

"I have been most fortunate to be an active participant and speaker at some of the Texas Brigades.  To put my experience simply, the Brigades are difference makers for young people.  Brigades are week long investment for a life-changing outcome for youth participants." - Dr. Chris Boleman

Entomology Judging Clinic

The Department of Entomology at Texas A&M will be hosting an Entomology Judging Clinic Saturday, March 29, 2014 on the campus of Texas A&M University.
The Entomology Judging Clinic is designed for all youth including 4-H, FFA, scouts, etc., that have an interest in entomology and the youth contests for 4-H and FFA.  The program will be from 8am to Noon and include separate instruction for beginning students and for advanced students on order recognition, morphology, biology and ecology, as well as materials, supplies, and instruction on making collections.  Everyone will then be able to rotate through instruction modules on insect diversity by order or order groups so that they can see, compare and interpret variation in size, structure, color, etc. across a multitude of specimen examples.  There will be a contest room for all to test their skill in a format similar to the 4-H and FFA insect identification contests.  We fully expect the adult leaders to attend any or all sessions and work side-by-side with their members, and we will have a list of resource materials available for their future use.
Students interested in the program must register at https://www.judgingcard.com ; click on Registration and Information; select the calendar month March 2014; select “TAMU Judging Clinics” on calendar date 29 March; and register for “Entomology”.  The cost is $10.00 per person; late registration is $15.00 per person.
