4-H Dog Certification is due January 10, 2014. Dog Certification is completed for EACH DOG and will cover all 4-H Youth members in that family profile. However when certifying your dogs on 4-H CONNECT, you will select ONLY ONE 4-H youth member to conduct the certification under. Once a dog is certified and you begin registering for the State Dog Show, the certified dog(s) can be moved to the appropriate 4-H member that will be exhibiting the dog in the show.

Before beginning this process you must do the following:

Have a family and youth member profile established on 4-H Connect.
Be a paid/active youth member of Texas 4-H for the 2013-2014 year.
Have digital photos of your dog(s) from left side and right side. These photos must be accessible for upload during the validation process.

2014 Texas 4-H Volunteer Recognition Awards Program - NOW OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS

The Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program is excited to release the 2014 Volunteer Recognition Packet. The information piece includes instructions, guidelines, and criteria for nominating volunteers, businesses, alumni, agents, and specialists for the annual awards presented at Texas 4-H Roundup on Wednesday, June 11, 2014.

Recognition is a key component of acknowledging the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, businesses, and Extension employees. We hope that you will take some time to review the information packet to identify individuals or businesses in your county which have had a longtime positive effect on the 4-H and youth development program.

This year, all award nominations are to be submitted online between now and March 1, 2014, so there is plenty of time to identify and write up the application. To assist you with the nomination process, a worksheet for each award type is included in the packet.

Nominations DO NOT have to come solely from County Extension employees/support staff. Therefore, please share this information with your clientele in hopes they can identify and nominate some outstanding volunteers for the 2014 awards. All awards can be submitted on-line at: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/recognition

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Texas 4-H and Youth Development State Office or your District 4-H Specialist.

The trip was fabulous! During this 6-day conference delegates toured the D.C. area including visits to the Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, WWI and WWII Memorials, Iwo Jima Monument, Air Force Memorial, Dining at Union Station, Hard Rock Cafe and Old Ebbitt Grill, attend the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, tour the Capitol and Library of Congress, visit with Congressmen, tour Arlington National Cemetery and Amphitheatre, attend the play "Shear Madness" at the Kennedy Center and mass at the National Cathedral, visit the National Archives, National Air and Space Museum, National Holocaust Museum, Smithsonian Museum, view the Hope Diamond, China Town, Hirshhorn Sculpture Gardens and the Museum of Natural History.

Michael is now on a mission to encourage all 4-H’ers to complete a recordbook!

"Through 4-H I was able to travel places and to accomplish things I never thought I would ever see or do." says Michael. " I owe a big THANKS to our Dallas County Agent, Tamra McGaughy for encouraging me to submit a record book every year, the Texas 4-H Leadership Conference chaperones (Montza Williams, Meredith carter, or Charles Seeley) for getting us everywhere and making sure we were fed and a special thanks to Texas 4-H for giving me the opportunity to learn and experience things that have enriched my life. To all those 4-H members out there contemplating doing a record book, do it — it's well worth it."

Do you know your Lepidoptera from your Blatodea?

Do you know your Lepidoptera from your Blatodea? The Dallas County Entomology Team does!

Entomology is the scientific study of insecta and arachnida. Though most of us think of insects as only pests, there are actually more beneficial insects in the world than there are harmful ones. The study of insects is important to understand the roles they play in agriculture and in the world in which we live.

The Dallas County Senior Entomology Team took home first place at District IV contest earlier this year. Two senior team members placed individually. M. Apodaca placed first and M. Sullivan placed third as Senior Individuals. The team's high marks advanced them to compete at State Round Up over the summer. A great time was had by all participants!

The entomology project is open to any 4-H youth ages 8 - 18 interested in participating.

For more information, please contact… Joe Sullivan (joe@joseph-sullivan.com)

Clover Kids love bugs too!

Not old enough to be a full-fledged 4-H Entomologist? Then join the Urbanite Clovers! The Urbanite Clovers are 4-H youth in K (age 5) through second grade. Last month, the clovers learned about Lepidoptera (the order of butterflies and moths). Each month, the Clovers will take on a new order and create a curriculum related craft. For more information on participating as a Clover, please contact... Starla Apodaca starla.apodaca@tx.rr.com
